"We were all children once. And we all share the desire for the well-being of our children, which has always been and will continue to be the most universally cherished aspiration of humankind."
This is the sentence I took from the UN website said by the Secretary-General and which I believe is also our feeling toward childhood and children, isn't it? But lately in our country there are too many cases of child abuse that atonished our vulnerable heart. The following is the report from Shenzhen Daily reporting such cases in China and after it in the end link you will read a terrible family child abuse case in Guangzhou which I hope could arouse our anger, sympathy and action toward such cases.
Courts to toughen on child abuse
Shenzhen Daily 05-31-2013
COURTS across China have been ordered to mete out harsher sentences to child abusers, with the Supreme People’s Court publicizing three cases Wednesday as precedents.
They include the case of a teacher who was executed for his multiple rapes of seven primary school girls.
The top court’s order came amid growing public anger about the widespread sexual abuse of children; at least seven such cases have been reported in the past 20 days.
Xue Shulan, an associate supreme court judge, said teachers who sexually violate children should be severely punished.
“All levels of people’s courts should step up punishment over crimes against minors, handing out death penalties to criminals who severely harm the rights of the under-aged,” Xue said. “There should be absolutely no mercy.”
The 47-year-old teacher who was executed raped seven girls from 2009 to 2011. The court did not disclose where the offenses took place. He also forced the girls to watch pornographic videos and photographed them while they were being abused.
The two other cases the court cited involved non-sexual offenses against children. A stepmother was given a suspended death sentence for torturing her 5-year-old stepdaughter to death, and a man was jailed for four years for instigating teenagers’ thefts.
On May 8, six primary school girls were reportedly sexually assaulted by a principal and a government official in Wan-ning, Hainan Province.
Hainan police were accused of downplaying the case by saying the suspects did not have sex with the girls, even though forensic tests found otherwise. The principal has been charged with rape.
Last week, the girls’ parents appointed seven lawyers to sue the suspects and pressed charges against police for dereliction of duty.
But the parents later decided against using the lawyers, after they were threatened about “making a big deal out of the incident,” local media reported yesterday. |
